Let’s celebrate Cosmos!
While most people only recognize Sakura or cherry blossom as Japan’s iconic spring flowers, there is actually another flower that is worth celebrating: the Cosmos!
Cosmos will come in the fall. Hence, it is often called “autumn cherry blossom”, and indeed, its gorgeous white and pink tones remind us of Japan’s famous sakura.
This plant can be found in many parts of Japan, and Kochi Prefecture is no exception. In this prefecture, precisely in Ochi Town, there are thousands of Cosmos flowers that can be found here. In a park called Miyanomae Park. Miyanomae Park is right next to the Niyodo River, about a 1-hour drive from Kochi City.
Every year, a cosmos festival is held here, usually starting in September. This year, the event was held from September 30 to October 15. On these days, this flower is in full bloom.
And this week, I went there to prove it. Taking the train from Kochi Station, we will stop at Sakawa Station and then continue our journey by bus. After about 15 minutes on the bus, we were taken to the front of the park.
I don’t know exactly how many cosmos there are here, but they say that in early autumn, their fields are filled with 1.5 million pink and white cosmos flowers. No wonder being here is like being in a sea of flowers.
Just like any other festival, there is also a variety of food and drinks available. You can find food stalls lined up at this event, along with benches and tables for guests to enjoy their food and drinks. On weekends, there is also music to enjoy.
There are several locations spread across the park. But to enjoy the best, we have to pay another 500 yen.We will be taken around by a small vehicle for about 15–20 minutes, but after that, we can walk around this location freely by ourselves.
I highly recommend heading to this area!It seems like there are more flowers, so it seems tighter and better for taking photos, and because it is tighter, walking around this area is like walking through a labyrinth.
Watch out; don’t get lost!
Well, since you won’t get to appreciate this sea of flowers again, it’s acceptable to become lost in it:-)
